Truckers will have until 2019 to install electronic logging devices (ELD) if newly proposed legislation becomes law. The ELD Extension Act was submitted to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee by Rep. Brian Babin (R, Texas) who announced the bill on July 19th.
“If trucking companies want to continue implementing and using ELDs, they should go right ahead,” Rep. Babin said in a press release. “But for those who don’t want the burden, expense and uncertainty of putting one of these devices into every truck they own by the end of this year, we can and should offer relief.”
The ELD mandate was written into the MAP-21 highway funding bill of 2012, with all commercial trucks required to install ELDs within two years of publication of the final rule. Rep. Babin’s bill would extend that deadline by an additional two years. In order for the extension to take effect, the bill must be approved by the House and Senate, and signed by the President, either in the form of a standalone rule or as an amendment to another bill, such as the funding authorization for the Department of Transportation.
The proposed legislation was applauded by OOIDA, which recently attempted to challenge the ELD mandate in the Supreme Court, but the case was not accepted.
