The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) this month updated two of its key publications for freight brokers. The updates reflect FMCSA regulatory changes and the new food safety rules that began earlier this month. The guides include:
1. Carrier Selection Framework – TIA calls this publication “the definitive doctrine on carrier selection.” It was written by a committee of subject matter experts in freight brokerage operations, carrier operations, risk management, transportation attorneys, and insurance experts. This version contains several key updates and additions, including:
- The latest rulemakings surrounding CSA and the Safety Fitness Determination.
- A broker’s role in arranging transportation of hazardous materials.
- An update of insurance products used by brokers and 3PLs.
- An overview of the Food Safety Modernization Act.
2. Model Broker/Carrier Agreement – This is a sample contract that a broker can use when agreeing to work with a carrier. Updates include:
- New amendments and language that addresses the new food safety requirements.
- Sample terms and conditions for temperature-controlled and sealed shipments.
