The American Transportation Research Institute recently posted its yearly survey of the most critical issues facing the trucking industry. In it, they offer a list of 29 issues that “have been identified as the top industry issues for 2016 by industry professionals.” Survey participants are asked to choose the three most important issues facing their businesses.

Last year’s survey ranked these as the 10 most critical issues facing the trucking industry:

1. Hours of Service
2. CSA
3. Driver Shortage
4. Driver Retention
5. Truck Parking
6. ELD Mandate
7. Driver Health/Wellness
8. Economy
9. Infrastructure/Congestion/Funding
10. Driver Distraction

ATRI is part of the American Trucking Associations (ATA), which represents 35,000 carriers across the U.S., and includes the largest trucking companies.

Curiously, driver detention time isn’t one of the 29 issues listed by ATRI, even though 84% of the 257 carriers and owner-operators that DAT recently surveyed said that detention was one of the top five problems affecting their business. The ATRI survey does ask participants to add any issues that weren’t listed, though.
