The Packer spoke on May 25 with Dean Croke, Boston-based principal analyst for DAT Solutions, about the unprecedented truck rate increases the industry has seen far, and what may be around the corner.
Portland, Ore.-based DAT Freight & analytics, an online marketplace for spot market truckload freight, and Chicago-based FourKites, a provider of real-time tracking and visibility solutions across transportation modes and digital platforms, recently heralded a strategic partnership focused on bringing FourKite’s real-time, end-to-end supply chain visibility into DAT’s network.
Partnership will provide DAT customers with valuable new insight into the status of their loads from dock to dock, including predictive ETAs and wait-time information at more than 1 million shipper docks across North America.
Boone added that one approach to solving customer problems is to help carriers and shippers filter out information they don’t need while automating manual processes. DAT Book Now was launched last year with that very goal in mind.

The partnership will give brokers the ability to improve their customer service and strengthen relationships with carriers, all while reducing the need for check-calls and ETA management.
In April, spot rates — the price for a truck booked today as opposed to in advance — were the second highest ever recorded, reported DAT, the largest US load board, where shippers and brokers list loads for carriers to grab. At the same time, rates for precontracted trucks were at a 12-month high.
The joint partnership aims to provide transparency and with real-time, end-to-end visibility into truckload freight while strengthening the relationship between broker and carrier.
DAT Freight & Analytics and FourKites have partnered to bring real-time, end-to-end supply chain visibility to the DAT network. According to both companies, the partnership will give brokers the ability to "seamlessly improve customer service and strengthen relationships with carriers, reducing the need for check-calls and ETA management," the companies stated. It will also enable carriers to integrate tracking through their ELD or other applications.
