"Some say it's simple to get your authority, and that you should save your money and do it yourself. Other people, including myself, are not sure where to even begin. I used a service provided by DAT to get my authority. It was important to me that it was done right the first time, by people who have done this before."
- Chad Boblett - Boblett Brothers Trucking
"They took me by the hand an led me through all of the diffiult and confusing steps to ensure that I started off on the right food. I cannot say it any clearer than these folks know what it's all about."
- Gregg Knight, LTL Trucking
Broker authority is the permission granted by the government that allows you to facilitate load deliveries between shippers and carriers. Trucking operations and brokerages alike need to receive MC numbers before they can begin operations. Brokers also need to apply for an FF (or freight forwarder) number from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and a DOT number from the U.S. Department of Transportation).
Our broker authority package starts at $685. This covers all your federal fees, your USDOT number, your designation of process agents (Form BOC-3), and your motor carrier number, as well as your Unified Carrier Registration. The fee also includes a free trial of DAT load boards and a 10% discount if you decide to sign up. Request more information about DAT Authority here or contact us at 866.265.3172.
The usual turnaround time to receive your MC number is about five to seven weeks. Federal approvals alone require an average of 16 business days to complete. Though this may seem like a long time, the experts at DAT Authority dot the Is and cross the Ts so there are no sudden hiccups that could delay your approval.
After you decide on your business’s legal structure, you must apply for broker authority from the FMCSA. Then you select your process agents, who are your legal representatives in each state where you’ll be operating. After that, you’ll need to obtain a surety bond or trust fund of $75,000, which insures you in case of an accident. Then, all that’s left is to register your business with the UCRA, and finalize any relevant state or local paperwork. Once your office is set up, you’re ready to hit the ground running.
DAT Authority prepares all your paperwork, including whatever state registrations may be relevant to your brokerage. However, while we do cover your federal processing fees, we do not currently pay for state and local permits.
We do! The DAT One freight platform gives you everything you need to run your brokerage, including: load boards, lane rates, carrier monitoring, carrier onboarding, Broker TMS, load tracking, and more! Our Broker TMS is a transportation management system designed to streamline the backend of your operations so your team will be more efficient than ever at brokering freight. Pair that with integrations with our other services, and it forms the digital backbone of your freight broker business.
